Children Not Wanted in Mosques?

by Sumaya Bezrati Today I read someone’s status message that was criticizing children’s misbehavior in the mosque (albeit jokingly) but it still struck a nerve with me. This would be the 4th status message about this very topic that I have read this Ramadan. When did the Ummah become this intolerant of children in the mosque? I love going to the mosque. It brings a sense of ease and peace over me that no matter how I hard try I [...]

Statement of Muslim American Imams, Community Leaders on Holocaust Denial

On August 7-11, eight prominent Muslim American imams and community leaders partook in a historic trip to two Holocaust camps, Dachau and Auschwitz. New Jersey Rabbi Jack Bemporad said the purpose of this trip was meant “to combat the rise in Holocaust denial that has popped up in various Muslim and non-Muslim circles around the world — and online — in recent years.” After their emotional and profound experience, these imams released the following statement: Statement of Muslim American Imams [...]

NY1′s Full Interview with the Developer of Downtown Islamic Center

“I’m surprised at the way that politics is being played in 2010. There are issues that are affecting our country which are real issues: unemployment, poverty, the economy, and it’s a really sad day for America when our politicians choose to look at a constitutional right and use that as basis for elections.” Watch the full interview with developer Sharif El-Gamal: http://www.ny1.com/content/news_beats/politics/123935/story

myRamadan: Making New Traditions

Amelia’s story |  Samina’s story | Hana’s story | Sumaya’s story |  Alia’s story by Sumaya Bezrati (Special recipe included at the end.) As a fairly new mother with a toddler in tow, I have thought long and hard about Ramadan traditions that will instill a sense of love for the Holy month in my children. It can be hard living in a predominately non-Muslim society, where sometimes the spirit of Ramadan isn’t always felt. Especially, if you are like [...]

First “Droned”, then Drowned! Who Shall Help the Flood Victims in Pakistan?

by Rahil Khan While the scope of the destruction caused by the floods in Pakistan is heart-wrenching, the relief efforts are even more frustrating.  The way the worst crisis in Pakistan was handled by the government, especially by our President Zardari, you would know that they are simply not competent to deal with the scale of the disaster. I am afraid our leaders are politicizing this disaster and some are probably even drooling over the prospects of more riches as [...]
