We make mindless decisions on the spot, without realizing the consequences. If we stopped to rethink for just a moment about what the gains are, there might be a different outcome. On the topic of gains, some common intentions of shoppers are: to "gain" status by buying an expensive item, or to "gain" a person's affection by buying commercially symbolic items. These gains are immaterial and pass away with time. And none of these gains will actually sustain a healthy persona or relationship; they will simply reveal insecurities.
