We rose before the sun,
Tired eyes, filled mouths,
And before the dawn splintered
Prostration’s patience began.
A day with no food,
A day without water,
But with the sun’s journey
Was also the soul’s.
A physical deprivation
But with spiritual sustenance,
As the sounds of recitation
Filled the open air.
This year was slightly different,
Isolated at home,
Missing the comforting smiles,
The community.
Taraweeh at home,
A virtual bayaan,
Social distancing protocols,
A Ramadan alone.
But just like that first drop
Of water to touch my lips,
There was a coolness in most days
That is still well within our reach.
When we take the time
To appreciate each breath,
In moments of prayer
Or the ringing words of faith.
When we realize
We can never be lonely –
For when we remember Allah,
He surely remembers us.
