1. Cottagecore Fashion
In their latest “Year in Review,” popular social media platform Tumblr called 2020 “The year of cottagecore” and the trend’s popularity is continuing into 2021. Cottagecore is defined as an aesthetic in which people dress as though they are living in a cottage. Likewise, fashion elements include “floral dresses with puff sleeves and tiered skirts.” Because of its “countryside” feel, this trend consists of long dresses and skirts, which is perfect for modest fashion-lovers.
2. 90’s Fashion
Style from the 90’s is currently making a comeback and we’re here for it! Argyle sweaters have popped up all over everyone’s Instagram feeds, and the long-sleeves are great for staying warm and modest in the winter. Denim on denim is also gaining popularity, and the trend is super convenient to hop onto, as all you need is a denim jacket and mom jeans.
3. Skater Style
Popularized on the well-known social media platform TikTok, skater style has drawn inspiration from skateboarders. Beanies and Vans sneakers are iconic elements of this trend, but other items of clothing can vary based on individual style. For a more grungy feel, chains with baggy, cargo pants or blue jeans paired with an oversized sports sweater are in fashion. For a more feminine look, pants can be worn underneath skater dresses to be true to the trend, while also being modest.
4. Bucket Hats
Bucket hats became a staple in everyone’s wardrobe in 2020. Not only are they stylish, but they are also useful. In the summer, cotton bucket hats can help keep cool and come in a multitude of colors. In the winter, furry bucket hats can help to keep one warm. All in all, this trend does not seem to be dying down any time soon!
5. Cardigans
This winter, cardigans have also made a comeback in popularity. Neutral colors like beige and brown look good with everyone’s skin tone, and their long length make it a great fit for modest dressers who not only want to look good, but also stay cozy.
6. Jumpsuits
While short rompers have been popular for a while, recently the more modest version has started a trend. Jumpsuits can be worn under long-sleeve shirts so that modest dressers can follow the trend. More neutral colors of jumpsuits can be worn in business-casual settings and more bright, colorful jumpsuits can be worn in casual settings, making this trend extremely versatile.
7. Trench Coats
Trench coats are something everyone must have in their closet, as they provide a way to dress for the winter weather in a business-casual setting. Simply adding a trench coat to a casual pair of pants and a plain T-shirt adds another dimension to the look, giving it a more elegant feel.
8. Puffer Jackets
Another must-have this winter is a puffer jacket. It is so hard to stay fashionable in freezing weather, but this staple allows one to do just that! A nice black or white puffer jacket is easy to style with anything, and recently more vibrant colors have also come into style, allowing the jacket to be an eye-catcher. Either way, a puffer jacket is something that anyone, regardless of personal style or aesthetic, can wear.
9. Bandanas
As 2000s style is trending again, so are their essential fashion element: a bandana! Modest fashion bloggers are reinventing how to use the look, as they can be layered underneath long-sleeve shirts as a mock tube top or worn on top of a hijab. Classic-style bandanas give an edge to a simple look, while sophisticated prints make for a more refined look.
10. Cultural Clothing
To finish off this list, American-Muslims have been reclaiming their cultural heritage through the means of fashion. By using fashion to express their identity, they have not only started a new wave of trends in style, but also a movement in American society which shows people that they should not and will not assimilate to make Islamophobes more comfortable. This fashion trend will hopefully inspire not just American-Muslims, but Muslims all around the world to not be afraid to be proud of who they are and where they come from.
